La tesina puede mostrar diferentes posibilidades de conocimiento, formación o práctica profesional. El contenido o estructura para Relaciones Internacionales puede resultar de un informe de práctica profesional a manera de ensayo.
La tesina puede ser la modalidad de titulación que adopten los egresados con experiencia profesional, y recupere la perspectiva de la situación laboral.
Con el propósito de contar con criterios académicos, se señalan las siguientes consideraciones generales:
1. Indicar la forma, contenido y estructura que adquiere: informe de práctica profesional.
2. Delimitación del campo temático: el cual específica donde se desarrolla la experiencia (espacio, tiempo y circunstancia).
3. Justificación del tema: indica la pertinencia del ejercicio, en específico para la disciplina; el conocimiento social en general, o para la práctica profesional del sustentante.
4. Objetivos: expresan las metas y resultados alcanzados, en términos analíticos y materiales.
5. Esquema de presentación y desarrollo de la tesina.
6. Conclusiones: presentación de resultados.
7. Fuentes de información: bibliografía, hemerografía, entrevistas, páginas electrónicas, entre otros, deberán identificarse con claridad, respetando las convenciones para indicar de manera completa su referencia. Se deberá manejar un mínimo de 10 referencias especializadas de la disciplina.
8. Extensión: el documento podrá constar de 60 cuartillas en promedio (no incluye bibliografía, anexos ni apéndices).

Es un trabajo de análisis que aborda un tema específico con rigor teórico y metodológico en el que se sustentan, precisamente, argumentos o preguntas, sujetos a comprobación o contrastación.

La tesis puede ser una investigación teórica o empírica. Permite la construcción del objeto de estudio (la cual, en sí ya es resultado de la investigación), así como el diálogo entre el aparato conceptual y la realidad. Según del tipo de investigación del que se trate, la tesis puede manejar diversas herramientas que muestran la relación entre la reflexión y la investigación correcta, en el entendido que el papel que desempeñan los instrumentos y herramientas que apoyan la verificación, podrán variar.
Mediante este tipo de investigación el estudiante construye, delimita, desarrolla (contrasta o refuta) y explica un objeto de estudio, con base en el uso de recursos teóricos y metodológicos propios de la disciplina.
En función de lo anterior, y con el propósito de homologar académicamente los contenidos para las cinco especialidades, se proponen los siguientes criterios generales:
1. Delimitación del tema: identifica el objeto a estudiar, sus límites históricos (temporales).
2. Justificación y planteamiento del problema: precisa la importancia que tiene el objeto de estudio, con base en una exploración general del tema (estado del conocimiento); expresa la solución de un problema social delimitado, indicando la importancia para la disciplina.
3. Objetivos: expresa las metas y resultados esperados, en términos analíticos y empíricos.
4. Construcción teórica del objeto: A partir de marcos de referencia conceptuales de la disciplina en cuestión, se construye el objeto de estudio de manera abstracta.
5. Hipótesis: es el supuesto teórico que guía la investigación. En caso de que el estudio o tipo de investigación no requiera hipótesis, se establecen las preguntas que guían la investigación. En caso de que la investigación parta de ellas, éstas pueden ser de orden general o particular, y sugieren la explicación de los hechos que se someten a comprobación.
6.Metodología: indica la coherencia lógica de investigación, e indica el uso y pertinencia de las técnicas (documentales, empírico-prácticas, etc.), con base en las cuales se realiza el estudio.
7. Esquema general del trabajo por capítulos.
8. Fuentes de información: indica el empleo de bibliografía, hemerografía y otros recursos (digitales) que apoyan la investigación. Se deben respetar los criterios vigentes para realizar citas e indicar referencias. Se considera conveniente el manejo de un mínimo de 20 referencias correspondientes a la disciplina respectiva.
9. Conclusiones: presenta los resultados y comprobación de las hipótesis.
10. Extensión: con el propósito de definir un común denominador para las cuatro carreras, se considera apropiado un promedio de 80 cuartillas, mismas que no contabilizan bibliografía, anexos ni apéndices.
El formato para la presentación de protocolo puede variar. Sin embargo, se sugiere que el primer capítulo de la tesis sea constituido por el proyecto de investigación.
